Reaction The Jackie Robinson Story Essay Example For Students

Reaction The Jackie Robinson Story Essay Upon viewing the film, The Jackie Robinson Story, one can only ask the question was it really like that? Was Jackie harrassed and tormented by virtually everyone but a select few. This paper will discuss the effectiveness or non-effectiveness of the film, and include ideas based on the whether or not the film accurately portrays Jackies life story. I will not only discuss the events of his childhood but also his life as a grown individual. I should first start out by saying that in my opinion the show was very effective at the way that society in general percieved Black Americans. At the beginning of the show, it shows many young boys receiving ground balls from their baseball coach. A young Jackie Robinson was standing on second base and asked politely for his turn. Immediately one coach said to another Watch this and proceded to hit a screaming ground ball in his direction. Well Jackie being as well as he was proceded to field the ball and throw it back to the coach as if it were routine to him. Once again the coach said, Well watch this one, once again he hit a screaming ground ball, that most kids in high school would not stand in front of, but once again Jackie stabbed it and returned it properly to his coach. This amazed the coach, and not only did it amaze him but also for everyone that witnessed the occurance. What was the big deal you ask? Well he did it without even having a glove on either hand. You see Jackie was to poor to own his own mit. This example shows the what the normal reaction of most caucations was back in the late 1920s and through the later. The majority at this time was caucasion, and if you were black you were looked upon as not even qualifing as a human being. This can also be seen later in the movie when Jackie as a grown man, that is enrolled in a well known athletic institutionUCLA is applying for coaching jobs. There should be no reason that a graduate of UCLA can not find a job somewhere within this country. Since Jackie was somewhat a well-known black athlete he was being denied a job. His brother a graduate of college received a job, but not any job; as a person that cleaned streets for a living. At this time that is the kind of job that Black Americans could hold if they were lucky. When Jackie first set foot on the baseball field, his own coach was asked if he thought that baseball could accept this man into its league. The coach responded with Well, lets see if I can accept him first. This film does a great job in portraying the struggles that Jackie and all colored persons endured throughout these times. When his team, the Panthers was on the road they had to travel from town to town to play ball games. This was the way they made their money. There were no contracts, there were no fancy hotels waiting for them. They had to stop at diners to see if they could even be fed. To me this is a great portrayal of how they had to struggle between meals. Some place would not even serve them simply because they were black, and when they did get fed they could not sit down in the restaurant and eat they had to eat it on the bus. After Jackie had made the team due to a loyal Branch Rickey, the fans and also some of his own teammates criticized the Dodger Organization. .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 , .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .postImageUrl , .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 , .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:hover , .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:visited , .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:active { border:0!important; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:active , .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8 .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u712e9df48d608b44c6cf51ef6ed8b0b8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Specific heat of solids Essay Mainly Rickey himself. Some players petitioned that they would not feel comfortable with Robinson on the team. One instance in the film, was when Jackie was jumped by three gentlemen after his game and then threatened that he better not play in tommorrows game or else. These are many examples of the kind of tormenting that was forced upon Robinson, simply because he was a colored athlete trying to make it in a white mans game. One area in which I disagree with the film is on how everyone .

It is known to interrupt Black Marias, to ache feelings and, believe it or non, it genuinely is non ever merrily of all time after. Yes, Love does hold its positive points. It is thrilling and exciting when you # 8217 ; re in love, it is sometimes even euphoric but the statement here is non whether Love is good or bad for you. There are negative facets to it every bit good. There is misrepresentation, sightlessness, exposure, every bit good as sodiums? vet? . It takes plentifulness of attempt to work at a relationship. Love can be nonreversible, suffering, even simply elating. The per centum rate of self-destruction due to love being rejected, non out, is highly high. This is portion of world and it has been accepted by some of the population, yet there are some people that still believe it is a dream universe. Are the descriptions of love in Like Water for Chocolate, The Princess Bride, and Tristan A ; Iseult the ideal perceptual experience of what existent love today is genuinely approximately, or are viewing audiences being deceived by a faulty image? When examined, Like Water for Chocolate, Tristan A ; Iseult, every bit good as The Princess Bride each exemplify the thought of out yet ever surpassing love, therefore lead oning readers and viewing audiences into the false belief that # 8220 ; Love conquers all # 8221 ; and puting a deformed image that without love, there is nil and with love, you do non necessitate anything else. The Princess Bride negotiations about Heartbroken, Buttercup who goes into mourning for her lost love, and re-emerges five old ages subsequently as the unwilling fiancee of the evil Prince Humperdinck. Of class, before the twosome can be reunited in blest marriage, there are a figure of interesting obstructions to get the better of. # 8220 ; The Princess Bride # 8221 ; evokes the admiration of faery narratives, with its damsels-in-distress, evil monsters, and generous parts of love affair thrown. A fantastic faery narrative it is and cognizing full well that nil is to be taken literally, it is merely natural for one to sift the true significance behind this film. Love conquers all. As many times as this phrase is to be used, it is necessary to maintain adverting it. It is apprehensible to state that this film has been created for kids, but is it non incorrect to lead on them about the thought of love? It builds an unneeded thought that there is no halting Love when it comes your manner. There is little enduring in the film when Buttercup feels the loss of her true love, and so loses him once more for the 2nd clip after the Prince efforts to kill him. Yet, Westley revives, twice, on the footing that he has promised his one and true love that he shall be back for her. Nothing is traveling to halt him. As for Buttercup, she remains ever-so-faithful for 5 old age s until she is forced to get married the prince and would instead decease with her love than to populate without him. Make kids besides keep in head that Buttercup and Westley had barely uttered more than two words to each other at one clip before they impotently fell in-love? Love at first sight may be, but non in the manner it is displayed in the film. Another somewhat upseting issue is that this film is non merely made for kids Like Water for Chocolate is a novel that is assorted with love, hatred, relationships, wit, tradition, fate and thaumaturgy that are all revealed through nutrient created in the kitchen. The assorted formulas that introduce each chapter fell within themselves a narrative. Tita, the chief character, has been out of her lone true love because he is married to her sister. The intent behind the creative activity of her alien dishes was for Tita to show her feelings to Pedro, yet remain concealed, disguised in the nutrient. She allows these emotions to overpower her and take control of her in the kitchen. Nothing else could compare to the scene when she prepares her formula for Quail in Rose Petal Sauce. In the dish she uses rose petals, given to her by Pedro. Tita holds the roses so tightly to her thorax that her blood and perspiration and the rose petals all intermix. The Quail in Rose Petal Sauce it is a trigger that sends the message of two lovers lustfulness that could non be reached . The pragmatism of this book is expressed

Why Do We Need The Covenants Essays - Law In The Bible,

Why Do We Need The Covenants? Judy Beaty GREL 1003: Principals of Biblical Faith Prof. J. Gordon Eisenman 11 October 2000 Why do we need the Covenants? Could mere obedience to law bring about forgiveness of sins and salvation? God's whole plan of salvation is promised and understood through the Covenants. Many denominations have different beliefs, however, thanks to the Covenants, all believe that the only condition for salvation that He requires is faith. These Covenants were and are still very necessary because they convey God's promise. An understanding of the Covenants helps build a person's faith and gives one a much better basis for understanding of the Bible. The need for the Covenants was pointed out by God in Romans 3:23, where He said, ?all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.? In the Old Testament, the believers did not have God's Spirit in them as a permanent gift. The laws, of the Old Covenant, were broken by Gods people, even though, both Covenants made clear that the way to be declared ?not guilty? by Him was not for good work or deeds, but by faith. The Old Covenant ? What and Where Whenever God makes a promise or gives man a commandment or a prohibition, He makes a covenant with man. This type of contract usually comes about through negotiations. Once an agreement is reached, it is usually sealed in some formal way. Thus, it becomes binding to everyone. The Old Covenant was essentially a contract between God and the Israelites (His chosen people). He sent Moses to these people to convey his message, which was ?If ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people; for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and an holy nation? (KJV) Exodus 19:5 ? 6. The physical sign of following the Old Covenant was circumcision. The Mosaic Law was a central part of the Old Covenant. This law was the moral record of how God's people were supposed to live. The vehicle by which God taught people about their own sinfulness and their need for a savior was the Law in the Old Testament. However, Paul, along with the rest of the apostles, taught that salvation was impossible through obedience to the Law, even under the Old Covenant. Paul stated this in Romans 3:20, ?because of the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.? He also goes on in Romans 4 to show that not even Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel, was justified before God through faith, not by works. In Timothy, when Paul uses the words ?Scriptures? or ?sacred writings?, he is referring to the Old Testament, which of course, included the Law. Old Covenant Followers There were several people who followed the Old Covenant, such as Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Jacob and Moses. One such person who was good and followed everything God told him to do was Moses. The Bible makes it clear that Moses is founder of the Jewish people and Judaism, the faith, but that Abraham is the founder of the nation. As the leader of the Jews he freed them from slavery in Egypt, as well as protected them from the wrath of God, and negotiated with God on their behalf. Moses is said to be the author of the first five books of the Bible, best known as the ?Torah?. He is the greatest of the Hebrew prophets, who had many ?face to face? meetings with God. God had Moses come up the mountain, where he received the stone tablets (the 10 Commandments) to take down to His people and thus interpret these laws to them. God trusted and believed in Moses because he always followed His direction and never, was there any doubt of Moses' faith. Old and New Covenant ? Similarities and Differences God put both the Old Covenant and the New Covenant into motion and He set the terms. The ultimate goal of both covenants is ?they will truly be my people and I will be their God? Jeremiah 31:33. Jesus was more concerned about the

Hate crime Against Arab Americans Research Paper

Hate crime Against Arab Americans - Research Paper Example The increase in hate crime is however slowing down but still higher than the periods before 2001. The major objective of this paper is to outline the nature of hate crimes against Arab Americans that have been witnessed in the U.S. and outline the possible solutions to the problem. This paper has also outlined the rooted discrimination against the Arab Americans in the job market. As reported in this paper, the government agencies such as FBI, police, INS and the American airlines have been discriminatory against the Arab Americans. This paper also reports how the private sector has been discriminatory as well as providing unfavorable work conditions to the Arab Americans since the September attack. Hate crimes have not only focused on the Arab Americans but have also been witnessed against their property and their families. As reported in this paper however, the statements by high profile government officials like the president, the clergy, politicians as well as the involvement of the learning institutions is very important in ensuring that hate crimes are reduced in the US. Introduction The September 11, 2001 attack on the world trade center marked the beginning and the rise in the hate crimes mainly towards against the Arab Americans. The September attack which is claimed to have been engineered by the world most terrorist and leader of the Al-Qaida terrorist group Osama Bin laden also saw a number of Muslims being listed as either participated directly or indirectly in the attacks. This has resulted into the development of bad relationship between the government of the United States and the Muslim community. The level of hate crimes that has been reported against the Muslims, Arab Americans and Sikhs rose to five percent in the year 2001 just immediately after the September bomb attack that left property worth millions of dollars destroyed and several people dead. The statistics show that out of the total 9,730 victims of hate crimes, 481 were either of Mu slims, Arab Americans or Sikhs (Leadership conference, 2009). However, the highest victims of the three have been the Arab Americans. At present, statistics have shown that this trend has reduced compared to the year 2001. However, it is important to realize that the levels of hate crimes against the Arab Americans have stood higher than the days before 2001. During the year 2007 and 2008, at approximately 115 hate crimes were reported against the Arabs Americans which is above those that were reported during the year 2000 and the previous years. In 2009, there have been serious deaths committed by assailants against two Arab Americans, Mohammed Al Hadi and another clerk of the Middle East origin (leadership conference, 2009). The perception of the Arab Americans as terrorists has resulted into the increasing hate crimes against the Arab Americans. These are just but few examples that reveal clearly that the law enforcement agencies have either failed in their duties to report these hate crimes or are just reluctant to end the problem that is fueling hatred between the Arab Americans and the other Americans. Hate crimes in United States of America against the Arab Americans is therefore a problem that has to be managed immediately. America is likely to ignite civil war or war between civilians if hate

Leadership - Essay Example So, far we have talked about culture taken in a broader sense, however organization culture is a quite a narrowed down classification of culture and it could differ significantly from organization to organization. For instance the organizational culture of a hospital may differ significantly from that of a not-for-profit organization or a retail firm or even take the example of law firm. The basic Organizational Culture has some characteristics which if an organization can capitalize can pay them off big time for example culture are made up robust values which are almost impossible to change in a brief period of time so if an organization is able to capitalize on such characteristic it could inject ethics from the very outset of its existence. It could make loyalty, efficiency leadership and many different qualities such as these an integral part of it an employee routine. Employees are highly skilled and tend to stay in the organization, while working their way up the ranks. The organization provides a stable environment in which employees can development and exercise their skills. Examples are universities, hospitals, large corporations, etc. Employees are "free agents" who have highly prized skills. They are in high demand and can rather easily get jobs elsewhere. This type of culture exists in fast-paced, high-risk organizations, such as investment banking, advertising, etc. The most important requirement for employees in this culture is to fit into the group. Usually employees start at the bottom and stay with the organization. The organization promotes from within and highly values seniority. Examples are the military, some law firms, etc. Employees dont know if theyll be laid off or not. These organizations often undergo massive reorganization. There are many opportunities for those with timely, specialized skills. Examples are savings and loans, large

Book Review Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Book Review - Term Paper Example Unfortunately most of the organizations fail in this remake effort. Some fail miserably but most of the organization lie somewhere in between. According to Peter Senge in his 1999 book â€Å"Dance of Change† â€Å"This failure to sustain significant change recurs again and again despite substantial resources committed to the change effort (many are bankrolled by the top management), talented and committed people driving the change and high stakes. The companies that fail to sustain significant change end up facing crises. Despite this high failure rate the need for change is undeniable for sustained growth. In fact the sooner is the better otherwise options gets dried up and it requires heroic efforts to successfully bring change. The powerful macroeconomic forces that necessitate change are technological, international economic and open market forces. These forces simultaneously create opportunities and challenges for the organizations. The phenomena that some companies succ essfully manage dramatic changes, while others fail, intrigued Kotter. It led him to study more than hundred organizations involved in the change effort. He believes that the defining factors between success and failure of these change initiatives in business are some critical differences. This extensive study resulted in the development of a framework. He devised an eight phase process necessary for successful change. The most general lesson he derived from the case of successful companies is that each company has to undergo eight phases or steps in the change process without skipping any step. It requires a great deal of time and care because any critical mistake at any phase can be very costly to the company. Kotter’s view about change is quite dissimilar to the views of the vast majority on change management. Kotter emphasizes on leadership rather than management hence the name leading change rather than change management. He negates the common perception that change is a ll about management. He believes that successful transformation is 70-90 percent leadership and only 10-30 percent is management. Kotter not only recognizes the complexity of organizational change but also has proposed its solution with leadership, which is neither simple nor easy, instead of a logical process to manage change as prescribed in most of the books. Kotter’s book is also different from other books on account of its reliance on personal experience based on his exposure to companies for many years instead of drawing on other sources to bolster his arguments and conclusions. Kotter has attributed this undue emphasis on management to the mushroom growth of organizations by entrepreneurs in the twentieth century. Hundreds of mangers were required for the management of these organizations. A single leader with lots of managers could fulfill the requirements of a relatively slow pace of change in business. But the ever accelerating pace of change in the fast moving worl d of the twenty first century, decisions need to be made quickly and cannot take the ponderous and slow route of the management style. Dynamic adaptive enterprises of today’s world demand leadership. Kotter in his book has firstly identified the reasons of change programs failures and urged the importance of leadership and secondly has developed the change
