Why Do We Need The Covenants? Judy Beaty GREL 1003: Principals of Biblical Faith Prof. J. Gordon Eisenman 11 October 2000 Why do we need the Covenants? Could mere obedience to law bring about forgiveness of sins and salvation? God's whole plan of salvation is promised and understood through the Covenants. Many denominations have different beliefs, however, thanks to the Covenants, all believe that the only condition for salvation that He requires is faith. These Covenants were and are still very necessary because they convey God's promise. An understanding of the Covenants helps build a person's faith and gives one a much better basis for understanding of the Bible. The need for the Covenants was pointed out by God in Romans 3:23, where He said, ?all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.? In the Old Testament, the believers did not have God's Spirit in them as a permanent gift. The laws, of the Old Covenant, were broken by Gods people, even though, both Covenants made clear that the way to be declared ?not guilty? by Him was not for good work or deeds, but by faith. The Old Covenant ? What and Where Whenever God makes a promise or gives man a commandment or a prohibition, He makes a covenant with man. This type of contract usually comes about through negotiations. Once an agreement is reached, it is usually sealed in some formal way. Thus, it becomes binding to everyone. The Old Covenant was essentially a contract between God and the Israelites (His chosen people). He sent Moses to these people to convey his message, which was ?If ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people; for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and an holy nation? (KJV) Exodus 19:5 ? 6. The physical sign of following the Old Covenant was circumcision. The Mosaic Law was a central part of the Old Covenant. This law was the moral record of how God's people were supposed to live. The vehicle by which God taught people about their own sinfulness and their need for a savior was the Law in the Old Testament. However, Paul, along with the rest of the apostles, taught that salvation was impossible through obedience to the Law, even under the Old Covenant. Paul stated this in Romans 3:20, ?because of the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.? He also goes on in Romans 4 to show that not even Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel, was justified before God through faith, not by works. In Timothy, when Paul uses the words ?Scriptures? or ?sacred writings?, he is referring to the Old Testament, which of course, included the Law. Old Covenant Followers There were several people who followed the Old Covenant, such as Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Jacob and Moses. One such person who was good and followed everything God told him to do was Moses. The Bible makes it clear that Moses is founder of the Jewish people and Judaism, the faith, but that Abraham is the founder of the nation. As the leader of the Jews he freed them from slavery in Egypt, as well as protected them from the wrath of God, and negotiated with God on their behalf. Moses is said to be the author of the first five books of the Bible, best known as the ?Torah?. He is the greatest of the Hebrew prophets, who had many ?face to face? meetings with God. God had Moses come up the mountain, where he received the stone tablets (the 10 Commandments) to take down to His people and thus interpret these laws to them. God trusted and believed in Moses because he always followed His direction and never, was there any doubt of Moses' faith. Old and New Covenant ? However, the highest victims of the three have been the Arab Americans. At present, statistics have shown that this trend has reduced compared to the year 2001. However, it is important to realize that the levels of hate crimes against the Arab Americans have stood higher than the days before 2001. During the year 2007 and 2008, at approximately 115 hate crimes were reported against the Arabs Americans which is above those that were reported during the year 2000 and the previous years. In 2009, there have been serious deaths committed by assailants against two Arab Americans, Mohammed Al Hadi and another clerk of the Middle East origin (leadership conference, 2009). The perception of the Arab Americans as terrorists has resulted into the increasing hate crimes against the Arab Americans. These are just but few examples that reveal clearly that the law enforcement agencies have either failed in their duties to report these hate crimes or are just reluctant to end the problem that is fueling hatred between the Arab Americans and the other Americans. Logical-mathematical intelligence Tommy, who is a particular and diligent student, questions events and situations by looking for hidden rationales or reasons has the characteristics of a logical-mathematical intelligent student. His development of a shorthand system for effective note taking, where he always use a prewriting strategy for his major papers and projects make him have traits of the logical-mathematical intelligence. On the other hand, Tommy has introspective intelligence traits, which are highly reflected in his ability to be very single-minded focusing all of his energy and attention to tasks. His preference to work independently and be self-directed makes him an introspective intelligent student and his ability to see his assignments in terms of his own life experiences as well as paying close attention to the events that have correlative importance to his schoolwork. Teaching and assessment strategies Since Tommy possesses both logical-mathematical intelligence and retrospective intelligence, which involves numbers abstractions logic and reasoning. It is assumed that he is naturally intelligent. The teacher should involve him more in activities that are numerical and that require more reasoning and scientific thinking. He should be involved in exercises that involve number sense and numeration too as the assessor by now knows that he is rich in analytical and statistical problem solving. It should be noted that Tommys abilities to evaluate and utilize spatial and quantitative information in solving problems boost his personal self-confidence even when dealing with other life issues.

Stephen Dedalus Perception of Aesthetics in James Joyce’s novel A Port

Aesthetics is the philosophy of art. By appreciating the value of aesthetics, one can comprehend the meaning of the abstract notion of beauty. In James Joyce’s novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus’ perception of aesthetics is a key component in the main character’s pursuit of individuality and purpose. Through the use of literary techniques such as diction and tone, Joyce conveys the protagonist’s aesthetic development. This artistic growth, paralleled throughout the novel’s external structure with Dedalus’ coming of age, illustrates the life, purpose and aesthetic ambition of an artist: â€Å"To discover the mode of life or of art whereby the spirit can express itself in unfettered freedom† (Joyce 231). Stephen’s early childhood, depicted in chapter one, exposes the protagonist’s understanding of art through his naà ¯ve tone and childlike diction. In this stage of his development, the protagonist’s perception of aesthetics is defined according to what is nice. Also, the interesting use of the rhythmic and phonetic quality of words, along with the integration of verse, contributes to his infantile definition of the nature of art and beauty. The opening of the chapter demonstrates this wordplay through the childish story of the baby tuckoo and the moocow. Furthermore, Dedalus is shown to have an innate comprehension of art: â€Å"He wanted to cry quietly but not for himself: for the words, so beautiful and sad, like music† (Joyce 18). As Stephen becomes aware of his surroundings, his perception of art begins to change. In chapter two, the protagonist’s eager tone leads him to develop a different understanding of the qualities of art. The author makes a literary allusion to Alexander Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cr... ...nd pursuit of purpose. The different visions of aesthetics, particular to each stage of his life, define his character development and the author’s portrayal of his artistic destiny. Following the â€Å"bildungsroman† style, Dedalus attains maturity through his conception of the value of art. His treatise on aesthetics leads him to conclude that in order to gain the necessary claritas, or clearness of mind for his artistic endeavors, he must voluntarily severe all bonds of faith, family and country. Only through this exile can the artist gain the unfettered freedom necessary for the production of life out of life and the fulfillment of art with the sole purpose of aesthetic accomplishment. Whether it’s art for art’s sake, or for any other purpose, as long as it complies with the parameters of aesthetic fulfillment and spiritual freedom, art will undoubtedly be beautiful.

Sometimes that is looking for love in the places we think are right for us and it could be us looking in the wrong places. What attracts us to someone? Is it in the tone of their voice when we listen to them speak? The feeling of their touch the minute they lay a single hand on you? Is it how their laugh makes you smile? Or is it them introducing you to the most important people in their life? We never truly know what it is that a person may see in us that makes them attracted to us. Because we dont truly know these things it often leads us to insecurities, depression, self-doubt, and sometimes death. In â€Å"Bien Pretty† by Sandra Cisneros, Lupe points out â€Å"What kills me is your silence. So certain, so solid. Not a note, nor postcard. Not a phone call, no number I could reach you at. No address I could write to. Neither yes nor no. Just the void. The days raw and wide as this drought-blue sky. Just the n othingness. That’s what hurts† (Cisneros 157). A man that she fell in love with just vanished as if everything they done was meaningless. Lupe was devastated and heartbroken when Flavio left, it took her weeks to pull herself up from this pain. During the time that Flavio was modeling for Lupe they began telling stories about each others lives. â€Å"What I liked best about working with Flavio were the stories† (Cisneros 148). How could this poor Mexican man that had very little take so much from her? Lupe began looking at Flavio a different way, she then imagined how â€Å"With skin sweet as burnt-milk candy, smooth as river water. He made you bien pretty even if I didn’t always know it. Yes he did† (Cisneros 152). Would that have been love for Lupe or was she just feeling that way because of the time they spent together? Lupe begins to ask herself â€Å"What’s happened to me? Flavio was just Flavio, a man I wouldn’t’ve looked at twice before† (Cisneros154). Everything around Lupe would remind her of all the little things of Flavio, In the beginning of the story Lupe points out â€Å"I’m to blame. Flavio Munguia was just an ordinary Flavio until he met me†¦ On ce you tell a man he’s pretty, there’s no taking it back† (Cisneros 137). Lupe chose to believe that she was the reason for Flavio being the way he was, that she turned him into this man that was selfish. After the ongoing relationship that Flavio and Lupe had, the truth was finally spoken. Flavio told Lupe that he had to go back to Mexico to take care of things back home. However, never once did he tell Lupe that he had children from another marriage. By the pain that Lupe was in the only words that could come out â€Å"I think you better go now. I gotta get my clothes out of the dryer before they get wrinkled† (Cisneros 157). Lupe tried to find peace, but because she was still broken all she could think of was anger and how much she wanted to hurt Flavio for hurting her. All that time you spend getting to know someone, loving their insecurities, and loving their biggest flaws for them to just hurt you and leave. Lupe was blinded by Flavio’s love that she forgot who she was. â€Å" Just the way I use to believe I was pretty. Before Flavio Munguia wore all my prettiness away† (Cisneros 137). Everything Lupe felt had turned away and made her feel less, â€Å" When I look in the mirror, Im ugly. How come I never noticed before?†(Cisneros 160). Lupe was in pain. Flavio made her feel like she was the weak one. She was too busy trying to make him feel special she forgot about her own self-worth. To The Girls Who Need To Love Themselves by Madison Sonnier writer from Thought Catalog, explains â€Å"I understand how you must be feeling – desperate for closure, envious of those living a fulfilling single life and loving it, and clueless about where to start on your journey to letting go of the person who haunts you and has consistently failed to give your rare and beautiful heart what it needs.† Lupe regretted two things; not telling Flavio she was in love with him and to ask for forgiveness. Lupe didn’t know what was going to happen next, what she did know was that this would be the last feeling he took from her. It took weeks before Lupe could pick herself back up, she would avoid going to work, painting, and being out in public. Lupe grabbed everything of Flavio and burned them â€Å" I didn’t expect paper to take so long to burn, but it was a lot of layers† (Cisneros 160-161). Later during that time Lupe sat herself in front of a t.v watching a telenovela show where she was then inspired. She would think of the words from Daniela Romo singing â€Å" Ya no. Es verdad que te adoro, pero mas me adoro yo† (I love you, honey, but I love me more)(Cisneros 163). Lupe was done feeling sorry for herself, she picked herself up and remembered who she was. She took a hold of her life, â€Å" The First Step† by Najwa Zebian states â€Å"In order to achieve greatness, you have to be willing to take the right steps towards it† (113). And that is exactly what Lupe chose to do, she chose to take her life back. â€Å"Everywhere I go, It’s me and me. Half of me liv ing my life, the other half watching me live it† ( Cisneros 163). Instead of hurting Flavio any way that she could have Lupe guided herself through the pain and turned it into something greater. We all want to know what it is that makes us feel as much pain when getting hurt. â€Å" Sexology† by Samuel Aun Weor writes â€Å" When human beings are truly in love, they become intuitive, mystical. In such moments they forebode their future, afraid of what might happen to them† (4). Lupe was in love with a man that she didn’t at first even see herself with or even would have noticed him. Even with all the stories they shared with each other, there could have been moments he could have told her the truth. Was it fear of losing her? Or was it that he took advantage of her? We aren’t sure why people don’t always speak up and just really say how they feel. We end up being the ones who are clueless. Lupe could have given up and let Flavio ruin her life, but she chose to become a strong woman and choose her. Love is costful, sometimes that is taking all of someone’s love or worse, someone can go beyond just being depressed but hurting themselve s or another. Love is complicated. Love is beyond us.
